Edi McGurk
Hanging By Threads (2023) 190cm x 190cm Textile
Made up of pillowcases sent to the artist from other chronically ill people, this work explores how an isolated, bed-based practice can be a collective one - drawing upon the legacies of textiles in political banners and political banners and activist quilts to communicate the rage and perspectives of disabled and sick people in a ‘post’ pandemic world.
Edi is a disabled and trans non-binary interdisciplinary artist based in Essex and, from time-to-time, East London. Due to chronic illness, most of the time they’re based in bed. Edi is dedicated to a socially-engaged practice that explores, reflects on and documents experiences of time, digital culture, power, identity, and belonging - with a particular focus on disability, place, gender and queerness. After originally developing their craft as a photographer, they now work with a slower, more accessible practice - with mediums including photography, moving image, sound, print and workshops.
