Peter’s work explores loneliness, isolation and ageing, depicting empty spaces, spaces that resonate, care homes, waiting rooms, a single chair in a room. The works leave questions unanswered; what is this space, why is it empty, who might be just out of sight, have just left or be about to arrive. The commode and the absorbent blue or pink chair or mattress protector allude to the problem of incontinence, usually but not always associated with the aged. The medium of black and white woodcuts reinforces the ever present juxtaposition of light and dark, happiness and sadness, good and bad, life and death, how one minute all is fine and the next so dark.
