Karen Wilcox ‘Empty chairs’ (2020)
Recent exhibiting TOMA Project Space artist Karen Wilcox made this new work during lockdown. It responds to Karen’s own experience of social isolation due to a disability as well as reflecting on the vulnerabilities of the old and mentally ill during the pandemic.
The gentleman depicted is waiting contemplatively surrounded by empty chairs, which are symbolic of the sad and avoidable losses. Colours and forms are fading away around him, as is his reality, in these strange and scary times. This painting highlights the collateral damages of the coronavirus, in particular the losses in care homes. These forgotten parts of society are something Karen continues to concentrate on in her work.
This latest art work relates to original painting, The Waiting Room, some thirty years on with its theme of isolation. This is current on display in the TOMA Project Space.
