Karen Wilcox 'Sketch for The Waiting Room I' (1982)
Karen Wilcox 'Sketch for The Waiting Room I' (1982)
Original artwork, 120 x 210 (approx A5), coloured pencil.
This coloured pencil study is part of a series of four.
Words from Karen; The drawings were inspired by “my frequent travelling to and from Lancaster railway station, sitting in the waiting room on cold and rainy days.” This drawing was later combined with sketches of the actual waiting room with drawings of people with mental health problems from a Day Centre in Southend on Sea. “I created a composition where each person is sharing the same space and experience yet remaining isolated through a lack of interaction with their fellow travellers. The waiting room is a metaphor for life’s struggles and periods of waiting for change, waiting to heal, waiting for news, etc.”
Karen Wilcox is an artist living in Eastwood, Southend-on-sea. ‘The Waiting Room’ exhibition was presented at The TOMA Project Space in March 2020, it contained a beautiful collection of previously un exhibited paintings and drawings by Karen from when she was drawing people with long standing mental health problems in a day centre in Southend-on-Sea.
