TOMA Project Space exhibiting artist, José Mario Dellow, has released these limited edition prints of a new artwork currently shown in The Only Guatemalan Adoptee in Essex.

A self portrait in acrylic. The original photograph was taken in Guatemala when my parents came to get me.

Adoptive kids are often very loved by the families who go to such great lengths to get them. However, I think adoption is kind of lonely. We are a little bit lonely in our families, where we stand out, and in our communities, where there don’t tend to be many adopted people about. And a bit lonely in our countries were most people (in my case) haven’t even heard of Guatemala. When I looked at myself in this photo, I saw the support of my mother, (whose arm is behind me) but I also saw a hint of loneliness.
