Karen Wilcox 'The Waiting Room' (1982)
Karen Wilcox 'The Waiting Room' (1982)
Original Artwork, 594 x 841 (approx A1) acrylic paint on paper.
Words from Karen: “This painting was inspired by my frequent travelling to and from Lancaster railway station, sitting in the waiting room on cold and rainy days. I combined sketches of the actual waiting room with my drawings of people with mental health problems from the Day Centre in Southend on Sea. I created a composition where each person is sharing the same space and experience yet remaining isolated through a lack of interaction with their fellow travellers. The waiting room is a metaphor for life’s struggles and periods of waiting for change, waiting to heal, waiting for news, etc.”
Karen Wilcox is an artist living in Eastwood, Southend-on-sea. ‘The Waiting Room’ exhibition was presented at The TOMA Project Space in March 2020, it contained a beautiful collection of previously un exhibited paintings and drawings by Karen from when she was drawing people with long standing mental health problems in a day centre in Southend-on-Sea.
