Karen Wilcox 'Waiting Study' (1981)
Karen Wilcox 'Waiting Study' (1981)
Original artwork, 210 x 297mm (A4), pencil and coloured pencil.
This is a study for a painting from 1981, here we see the same man in two positions facing each other. On the left he is seated with his glasses on and opposite to this he is standing, one arm behind his back, without his glasses in light shades of blue and orange. Karen’s studies of people waiting is a part of her practice in exploring metaphors for life’s struggles; periods of waiting for change, waiting to heal, waiting for news, etc.
*this image contains reflections: the darker grey gradient and the white reflection on the bottom left are not part of the image.
Karen Wilcox is an artist living in Eastwood, Southend-on-sea. ‘The Waiting Room’ exhibition was presented at The TOMA Project Space in March 2020, it contained a beautiful collection of previously un exhibited paintings and drawings by Karen from when she was drawing people with long standing mental health problems in a day centre in Southend-on-Sea.
